Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) over 2,500 years ago. It involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupoints, to balance the flow of Qi — the vital life energy.

According to TCM, Qi flows through channels or meridians, and any blockage or imbalance in this flow can lead to illness, pain, or emotional distress. Acupuncture aims to restore the body’s natural balance by removing these blockages and promoting the smooth flow of energy. While deeply rooted in Eastern medicine, acupuncture has become increasingly popular in modern healthcare for its ability to relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve overall health and wellness.

At Vitalitas, we integrate this ancient healing method into our holistic therapy sessions, offering our clients a natural path to healing and well-being.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific acupoints along the body’s meridian pathways. When these points are activated, they influence the body’s physiological functions, triggering a healing response. In TCM, acupuncture corrects imbalances in the flow of Qi, but modern research provides additional insight into how it works:

  • Nervous System Activation: The insertion of acupuncture needles sends signals to the brain and spinal cord, stimulating the release of natural chemicals like endorphins and serotonin. These chemicals help relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve mood.
  • Enhanced Blood Circulation: Acupuncture promotes increased blood flow to the areas treated, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissues and encouraging healing.
  • Balancing the Autonomic Nervous System: Acupuncture helps regulate the body’s stress response by balancing the sympathetic ("fight or flight") and parasympathetic ("rest and digest") nervous systems. This balance can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and promote relaxation.

Acupuncture is a holistic treatment that supports the body’s natural healing abilities, working on multiple levels to restore balance and vitality.

Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture is a specialised form of acupuncture that focuses on the ear, which is believed to represent a map of the body’s systems and organs. Practitioners use fine needles to stimulate specific points on the ear, helping to restore balance and promote healing throughout the body. This technique is often used to address a variety of conditions, including pain relief, stress reduction, and addiction management. Auricular acupuncture is particularly popular for its effectiveness in treating emotional and psychological issues, as well as physical ailments. The treatment is relatively quick and can lead to immediate relaxation and relief, making it a favoured choice for those seeking a natural and effective therapeutic option.

Scientific Support & Benefits

Though acupuncture originated in ancient times, it has gained credibility in the medical field through scientific studies and clinical research. Numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in treating a variety of conditions, particularly pain management, and it is now recognized by leading health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Key Benefits of Acupuncture:

  • Pain Relief: Acupuncture is widely used for managing chronic pain, including back pain, neck pain, arthritis, and migraines. It works by stimulating the body’s natural painkillers and reducing inflammation.

  • Stress Reduction: By promoting relaxation and balancing the nervous system, acupuncture helps reduce stress and anxiety levels, improving mental and emotional well-being.

  • Improved Sleep: Acupuncture has been shown to help with insomnia and other sleep disorders by regulating the body's sleep-wake cycles.

  • Enhanced Immune Function: Acupuncture supports the immune system, helping the body fight off infections and illnesses.

  • Digestive Health: Acupuncture can improve digestive function, aiding in the treatment of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and acid reflux.

  • Support for Reproductive Health: It is often used to enhance fertility, support pregnancy, and ease symptoms of hormonal imbalances.

What is the duration of each session?

The ideal duration for an acupuncture session typically ranges between 30 to 60 minutes. This can vary based on the individual’s condition and the therapy plan.

Follow-Up Sessions: This includes a brief check-in on progress and adjustments to the treatment plan as necessary. The duration of each follow-up session may vary based on how your body is responding to the therapy.

Course of Treatment: The number of sessions required will depend on the specific condition being treated. For acute issues, a few sessions over the course of a week or two may be sufficient. Chronic conditions may require longer-term treatment, with sessions spaced out over several weeks or months.

Is Acupuncture painful?

No, acupuncture is generally not painful. Most people report little to no discomfort during the treatment. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely fine—much thinner than the needles used for injections or blood draws—so the sensation is very mild. This may however vary for each individual depending on sensitivity.

At Vitalitas, our skilled practitioners & therapists prioritise your comfort and ensure that the experience is as gentle and soothing as possible.

For individuals who are uncomfortable with needles but still wish to experience the benefits of acupuncture, we offer a needle-free alternative. This option is perfect for those with a fear of needle insertion or for hyperactive individuals, including children with special needs, who may find it difficult to remain still during treatment. Our needle-free method provides the same therapeutic effects without the use of traditional needles, ensuring a comfortable and effective experience for all.

"I've been to several other acupuncturists before in the UK and from experience, all of them inserted tons of needles into the whole body probably to justify the exorbitant prices. I thought it was a norm until I moved to Malaysia for work and used Vitalitas' service. Master Genevieve only inserts the barest minimum needles that she thinks are necessary for my sciatica pain. She probably used around 10 or less needles for each session and follow-up the session with a massage and realignment of the nerves. Despite the lesser needles, I've never felt better! When I enquired as to why so few needles were used, she told me that "sometimes, less is more".

Leslie H. (UK)

"After several acupuncture sessions at Vitalitas, my digestion has improved tremendously. I used to get GERD almost every day and it was nauseating! The entire process was painless, and I felt so much relief from my symptoms. I’m grateful for the holistic approach."

Dina M. (Turkey)

"I had been struggling with migraines for years, and nothing worked until I tried acupuncture here. The results were amazing—I haven’t had a migraine in months! The team is so knowledgeable and caring."

Jason Lim (Klang)

"I was initially nervous about trying acupuncture, but the experience at Vitalitas was incredibly calming. Not only has my anxiety improved, but I also sleep better than I have in years. Highly recommend!"

Melissa Tan (Kuala Lumpur)

"My mother had very severe cramps around the lower legs for years. She also had a bulge on the right foot near the heel. It was hard and so, we thought it was related to the bone. We brought her to several clinics and some bone-setting centres over the years, but the painful bulge remained. Someone recommended us to visit Master Genevieve at Vitalitas. The moment she looked at my mother's foot, she just said it would be very easily resolved. She did an acupuncture session and used a device to promote blood circulation. Master Genevieve prepared us that she would be massaging the affected foot and it would be painful. My mother screamed her lungs out during the massage but after several minutes, the pain reduced. She was dismissed with a special-formulated ointment and asked to return one more time the next week. After the second session, the bulge disappeared and my mother never complained of pain again."
