Acupressure

What is Acupressure?

Acupressure is a healing technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves applying gentle pressure to specific points on the body, known as acupoints. These points lie along the body’s meridian pathways, which are believed to carry Qi (life force energy) throughout the body. Similar to acupuncture, acupressure seeks to restore the flow of Qi, promoting the body’s natural ability to heal itself. However, instead of needles, acupressure relies on the use of hands, fingers, or specialized tools to stimulate the acupoints.

Acupressure is a non-invasive therapy that can help alleviate a variety of conditions, such as pain, stress, and tension, while also enhancing overall well-being.

How Does Acupressure Work?

Acupressure works by stimulating specific points on the body to regulate the flow of Qi through the meridian system. By applying steady pressure to these acupoints, acupressure releases blockages in the energy flow, encouraging balance and harmony within the body. This technique activates the body’s natural healing mechanisms in the following ways:

  • Stimulates Circulation: Applying pressure improves blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells and tissues, which promotes healing.

  • Triggers Endorphin Release: Acupressure prompts the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins, which help reduce pain and promote a sense of relaxation.

  • Balances the Nervous System: By influencing the body's autonomic nervous system, acupressure helps reduce stress and tension, promoting relaxation and mental clarity.

  • Relieves Muscle Tension: It helps ease muscle stiffness and tension, making it effective for issues like headaches, neck pain, and back pain.

Whether used for specific health concerns or general wellness, acupressure provides a natural, drug-free approach to supporting the body’s ability to heal and maintain balance.

Auricular Acupressure

Auricular acupressure is a holistic therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the ear, known as auricular points, which correspond to various organs and systems in the body. This practice is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and is based on the principle that the ear acts as a microsystem, reflecting the entire body. By stimulating these points with gentle pressure, practitioners aim to promote healing, relieve pain, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. At Vitalitas, we utilise ear seeds—small, adhesive seeds placed on specific auricular points—to facilitate the therapy. This method allows for prolonged stimulation of the points, enhancing the therapeutic effects. Auricular acupressure can be particularly effective for conditions such as anxiety, addiction, and chronic pain, providing a non-invasive approach to wellness that is accessible and easy to incorporate into daily life.

Scientific Support & Benefits

While acupressure has been practiced for thousands of years in TCM, modern research has begun to explore its effectiveness in various health conditions. Several studies suggest that acupressure can offer significant therapeutic benefits:

  • Pain Relief: Research has shown that acupressure is effective in reducing pain from conditions like arthritis, lower back pain, and migraines. By stimulating pressure points, acupressure helps activate the body’s pain-relief mechanisms, providing a natural alternative to medication.

  • Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Studies have found that acupressure can lower levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and promote relaxation.

  • Improved Sleep: Acupressure has been found to help individuals with insomnia by promoting relaxation and regulating the body’s sleep-wake cycles.

  • Digestive Health: Acupressure has shown promise in supporting digestive health by helping relieve symptoms of nausea, bloating, and indigestion.

  • Support for Chronic Illnesses: Acupressure has been used as a complementary therapy to support individuals dealing with chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, cancer recovery, and fatigue by improving energy levels and alleviating symptoms.

What is the duration of each session?

Acupressure at Vitalitas is generally offered together with a massage or realignment therapy. There is no specific duration for an acupressure session as the practitioner / therapist will stimulate the relevant points during the massage therapy session to induce a certain effect that can promote health and well-being.

Follow-Up Sessions: This is to be discussed with the practitioner / therapist and will vary depending on individual's need(s) and condition(s).

Course of Treatment: The number of sessions required will depend on the specific condition being treated. For acute issues, a few sessions over the course of a week or two may be sufficient. Chronic conditions may require longer-term treatment, with sessions spaced out over several weeks or months.

Is Acupressure painful?

Acupressure is generally not painful. Most individuals experience a sense of relaxation and comfort during the treatment. While some people may feel slight pressure or a mild sensation at the acupoints being stimulated, it is generally never painful.

However, clients with specific conditions may occasionally find that certain points are tender or painful, often due to blocked Qi flow. In such cases, it’s essential to communicate with your practitioner, who can adjust the technique to enhance your comfort while still providing effective treatment.

"At Vitalitas, acupressure is not a session by itself. It is a technique used during their massages and they are invigorating. They just know the perfect points to press to stimulate a reaction from my body to induce relaxation. Love it! I tried to have a few sessions as I could before returning to Australia."

Trisha L. (Australia)

"Honestly, some points the therapists pressed were painful. But they showed me how those points were swollen, which could indicate some problems associated with certain organs. When I told them I could not stand the pain during the acupressure massage, they reduced the strength but over time, I got used to it and I really felt the difference."

Monica C. (Kuala Lumpur)

"Acupressure massage combined with Aromatherapy is the best therapy I've ever had! It reduced my anxiety and I sleep very well at night nowadays. Used to have insomnia. No longer do!"

Christine Yee (Klang)

"I love, love, love the massage sessions that incorporate Acupressure techniques at Vitalitas! You can really sleep off during the therapy session. Sometimes, I wished the sessions lasted longer!"

Tharshinni S. (Kuala Lumpur)

"The team does not only do acupressure on you, I like that they also educate you. I have an inquisitive mind, so I love to learn new things. I don't generally question every point they press during a massage but I like the fact that they try to enlighten me on certain things about the process during our little chats."
